I dreaded the idea of attending a memorial service for an old friend. Fred had rejected the need for Jesus in his life, and because of that I was sure he was lost forever.
Yet Fred’s many friendships had included followers of Jesus. At the service, as one of those friends spoke of a conversation he had in Fred’s last months, my eyes filled with tears.
Fred had asked him, “Do you think I’ll go to heaven?” The friend had honestly replied, “No, Fred. I don’t think so.” As they talked, Fred’s wall of resistance began to fall, and he said, “Philip, I believe that what the Bible says is true.” After a lifetime of rejecting the free gift of salvation, Fred finally accepted Jesus as his Savior.
With happy tears, I thought about the verse: “There will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine just persons who need no repentance” (Luke 15:7). Jesus and the angels were rejoicing with me.
As Fred had requested, we stood and sang, “Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so!” To my friend, those familiar words had become a personal reality.

SUKACITA DI SURGA
Bacaan : Lukas 15:4-7
Saya merasa gugup saat hendak menghadiri kebaktian penghiburan atas wafatnya seorang teman lama. Fred telah menolak Yesus dalam hidupnya, dan karena itu saya yakin ia tersesat selamanya.
Namun, banyak teman Fred yang telah menjadi pengikut Yesus. Pada saat kebaktian, air mata membasahi mata saya ketika salah satu temannya bercerita tentang perbincangan yang terjadi antara Fred dan dirinya bulan lalu.
Fred bertanya kepadanya, “Apakah menurutmu aku akan masuk ke surga?” Temannya lalu dengan jujur menjawab, “Tidak, Fred. Menurutku tidak.” Saat mereka berbincang-bincang, dinding pertahanan Fred mulai runtuh, dan berkata, “Philip, aku percaya bahwa apa yang disampaikan Alkitab itu benar.” Setelah sekian lama menolak anugerah penebusan, Fred akhirnya menerima Yesus sebagai Juru Selamatnya.
Dengan air mata bahagia, saya merenungkan ayat berikut ini: “Demikian juga akan ada sukacita di surga karena satu orang berdosa yang bertobat, lebih daripada sukacita karena sembilan puluh sembilan orang benar yang tidak memerlukan pertobatan” (Lukas 15:7). Yesus dan para malaikat ikut bersukacita bersama saya.
Sesuai dengan permintaan Fred, kami berdiri dan bernyanyi, “Yesus mengasihiku, aku tahu itu, Alkitab yang mengajarku!” Bagi teman saya ini, kata-kata yang sangat akrab tersebut telah menjadi kenyataan.
Marilah kita membawa sukacita ke dalam surga dengan menyebarkan kabar yang penuh sukacita: Yesus mengasihi kita, kita tahu itu! -CHK
